The purpose of this technical paper is to present an air monitoring strategy which ensures a nationally consistent approach to the implementation of the Ambient Air Quality – National Environment Protection Measure (AAQ NEPM) in Australia.

The Air Pollution Model is a screening procedure for determining the need for monitoring of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3) in small to medium cities without large industry has been applied to generic coastal and inland towns. The procedure involves simulating a 12-month period with the air quality model TAPM, for towns of different population sizes, and determining the maximum concentration likely to be monitored in the town. Population sizes evaluated were 250 000, 150 000, 100 000, 50 000 and 25 000.
